How to use it

  1. Choose one image. A square PNG with a transparent background works best.
  2. Tick the sizes to include: 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 or 256 pixels.
  3. If the image is not square, choose whether to fit it inside with transparent edges or crop it to a square.
  4. Create the ICO and download it, named after your image, like logo.ico.

Questions

Which sizes do I need for a favicon?
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels are enough. Add 256 pixels if you also want the icon to look sharp on the Windows desktop.
Does the icon keep transparency?
Yes. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the .ico file, so transparent areas stay transparent.
Will the ICO work everywhere?
Icons that store PNG images inside, as this tool makes them, work in all current browsers and in Windows Vista and later.
My image is small. Can I still make a 256 pixel icon?
You can, but the tool warns you because that size has to be enlarged and may look soft. For the best result, start with an image at least as large as the biggest size you choose.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The icon is created in your browser and your image is never uploaded.
